The Passing Over Ceremony

Covering Dorset and the UK, Wildflower Ceremonies would be honoured to create a unique, guided Passing Over Ceremony for your loved one.

The magnitude of losing someone from your earthy life is indescribable, and experienced differently by everyone. Just as your relationship with your beloved departed person will have been unique, your experience of losing them will also be unique to you – only you hold the memories you made together; only you can experience the loss of them in the way that you will.

The Passing Over Ceremony is a deeply personal ceremony for friends and family to come together to say goodbye to their beloved departed person in their own unique way. It doesn’t matter if you are very spiritual, or whether you have never thought about spirituality in your life; this is a ceremony for all those who love someone who has departed the earthly life, and wonders what on earth they will do with this love now, and how they might be able to find a little bit of peace.

The intimate nature of the Passing Over Ceremony means it can be highly beneficial when performed before a funeral ceremony, as many people report having found a public funeral ceremony easier to bear when they have had chance to say a personal goodbye through this gentle ritual. Equally, the Passing Over Ceremony can be hugely transformative even years later for those who are struggling to find peace with their grief.

This relaxed, tranquil ceremony is created around the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. These building blocks of earthly life are heralded in cultures across the world, and allow the ceremony to be as spiritual, or non-spiritual, as you would like it to be.

Traditionally, Earth represents home, roots and the earthly life, Air represents higher wisdom and light, Water is the home of our emotions, and Fire represents passion for life.

Softly, in honour of your departed loved one, we create a sacred space, smudging with incense or aromatherapy sprays to cleanse, and setting up ceremonial items, such as flowers, candles, photographs. The floor may be set with beautiful throws, rugs and cushions for you to sit on, or a semi-circle of chairs.

As we journey through the elements, everyone present will be invited to speak, either out loud or silently in their heart, their personal thoughts and goodbyes for the departed loved one, releasing grief, honouring their memory, and inviting peace.

This ceremony is fully guided, and it is not necessary to pre-prepare anything to say, or worry about what to say, in anyway – all will come from your heart, at the right time, in the right way. You do not have to speak aloud at all if you don’t want to. Not knowing what to say is also very natural, and in the sacred space, all feelings are honoured. There is no right or wrong way to feel at this time, only love.
